One American dies every hour of every day from what Dr. Curatola, an NYU professor, speaker, author, and expert in rejuvenation dentistry, calls "the shadow behind your smile," oral cancer. Oral cancer has become one of the most deadly cancers. Because oral cancer often is not caught early, only about half of the more than 35,000 Americans who will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year will be alive in five years.

During a segment on The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Curatola will discuss with Dr. Oz the importance of early detection in successfully treating the disease. With a camera focused on the oral cavity of the patient in the chair, the studio audience will see what the dentist sees, and also view intraoral photos of pre-cancer that are invisible to the naked eye but detectable by the multispectral lightwaves of Identafi 3000 ultra.

In a recent FOXNews.com blog, Curatola called oral cancer "the cancer you can catch."

The world's most advanced oral cancer detection device, Identafi 3000 ultra was developed through the collaboration of three institutions, including two in Texas — The University of Texas, and Rice University, and British Columbia Cancer Research Center in Vancouver, Canada. Trimira's multispectral technology represents a quantum leap in the visualization of mucosal abnormalities, including cancer or premalignant dysplasia.

The next-generation device features high-speed, high-resolution optical processing technologies that are changing the diagnostic landscape. Created expressly for intraoral use by dentists, primary-care physicians, periodontists, otolaryngologists, and oral surgeons, the cordless Identafi 3000 ultra is ergonomically shaped and lightweight.

Because it is portable, the handheld may be readily moved from room to room and patient to patient. It features a nickel-plated design that improves durability and delivers a smooth feel. 's A violet wavelength, the same as used in Identafi 3000 ultra, was cited in the May 2009 issue of Cancer Prevention Research, the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, as the best excitation wavelength for discriminating between neoplastic and non-neoplastic tissue. Identafi 3000 ultra gives users a higher degree of clinical accuracy and confidence, which translates into better patient care.

Noting the recent departure from the traditional oral cancer demographic of smokers and drinkers, Curatola also wrote that "a new cause has shifted the focus to much younger people with no other risk factors." He wrote: "Exposure to HPV-16...virus (human papiloma virus) transmitted by oral sex has become a major concern."

HPV-16 is the same virus responsible for a majority of cervical cancers.

Citing the five times increase in the occurrence of oral cancer in those under the age of 40, Curatola observed that annual oral cancer screenings are recommended for all patients over the age of 17. Early screening boosts the survival rate to 90 percent.

Curatola noted that many dentists "are still not using the assistance of an early detection device, whilch improves the patient's survival rate dramatically."

Andrés F. Zuluaga, vice president of research and development at Trimira's parent, Houston-based Remicalm LLC, observed that adjunctive technology like Identafi 3000 ultra should be used in conjunction with the American Dental Association's recommended conventional visual and tactile examination of the head, neck, and oral cavity. The gold standard of ascertaining whether a patient has oral cancer continues to be the biopsy. "Of course, it is not practical to do regular biopsies on all dental patients when actually only a small percentage of them have something that is of concern," he noted.
